Faro is a town located in the central western part of the and it’s the capital of Algarve. The biggest attractions are the beach and the downtown. The unique Algarve airport is in Faro, there arrives more than five million tourists a year. The international airport of Faro has a big offer of destinations in Europe and around the world.
The old part of the city, named “Vila Adentro” is embraced by the wall of the old castle. In that zone you can find some historical monuments, cultural cafés and restaurants. The center of Faro is the heart of the city, it’s possible to find some entertainment events there, a municipal museum and many international shops. You have the possibility to park your boat in Faro Marina.
Sometimes driving in Faro is not the best option because of the traffic. The traffic in Faro can get quite heavy sometimes, especially during rush hours. If you’re not used to drive in Portugal, it’s recommended driving careful in this city. In the center of the city you have to pay to park your car.
Faro has a public transportation network, named “O Próximo”. This is an easy way to go around the city very cheaply. Currently there are 11 routes and the cost per journey is 1,05€ (zone 1), 1,69€ (zone 2) and lines 2,22€ or you can buy a daily ticket for 5,29€.
Living in Faro
The weather is enjoyable for almost all the year. In summer is typical to have high temperatures and all days are very sunny.
The city has the exclusive Algarve University with two campuses, one in the metropolitan area of the city and the other 30 minutes faraway from the city, by bus. Students from all around the world choose Faro to live abroad, so it’s normal to find many foreign people.

It’s possible to appreciate the flavorful of the traditional gastronomy, strongly influenced by the Mediterranean cuisine. Also, in Faro you can find a variety of fresh fish, such as sardines, mackerel and tuna, or seafood such as clams, oysters, crayfish or prawns.
Best place to live
The city of Faro has 4 different freguesias: Faro, Montenegro, Santa Bárbara de Nexe and Conceição e Estoi. You can choose if you want to live in the center of the city, next to the beach or in the rustic zone.
The historic center is the oldest part of the city and it’s almost impossible to find a new building. You can find an old house and remodeling it. The population there is old and it’s a very touristic area, all the year. The parking could be a problem if you live in this zone.
Ocean front Area
Living next to the beach at summer could be perfect for the holidays. The beach parties, the bars and cafés always full of people. But, when the weather is cold this zone is a little bit lonely and faraway from the center of the city. Also, is recommended to have a warming system for the winter time.
The city of Faro has much more freguesias, outside of the center. If you want to live there, it’s recommended moving by car. It’s easy to find really cheap houses in this areas. In some neighborhoods, located outside of the city, you can buy an apartment or renovate one. The negative point is that you are faraway from the city center,
